AI traffic monitoring shows you how much traffic AI platforms — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — send to your store, and what that traffic is worth. Connect your Google Analytics account and InstaIndex builds a dashboard of sessions, visitors, engagement, key events, and revenue from each AI platform, along with AI traffic's share of your total sessions over time.
Shoppers increasingly discover products by asking AI assistants instead of searching. AI traffic monitoring gives you a clear, ongoing measure of how much of that behavior actually reaches your store.
Availability: AI traffic monitoring is available on the Premium plan and above.
What you need
A GA4 property that is collecting data for your store. Most Shopify stores using the Google & YouTube channel or a manual GA4 setup already have one.
A Google account with access to that property.
An InstaIndex subscription on the Premium plan or above.
Setting it up
In InstaIndex, go to AI SEO → AI traffic monitoring.
Click Connect Google Analytics and complete the Google sign-in in the window that opens.
Choose the GA4 property for your store.
That's it. The first sync imports your recent traffic history automatically, and it usually takes just a few minutes. After that, new data syncs from your GA4 property once a day.
The page subtitle always shows which property is connected and when the last sync ran. You can change the property or disconnect anytime from Settings on the same page.
What the dashboard shows
AI sessions — sessions that started from an AI platform referral in the selected period.
AI share of traffic — the percentage of all sessions on your store that came from AI platforms.
Visitors — unique visitors who arrived from an AI platform.
Engagement rate — the percentage of AI sessions that were engaged: lasted over 10 seconds, had a key event, or viewed two or more pages.
Key events — key events (conversions) recorded during AI sessions, as configured in your Analytics property.
Revenue — revenue attributed to AI sessions by Google Analytics.
Each metric is compared against the previous period of the same length. Below the stats, the AI sessions over time chart shows daily sessions from each platform, and the platform breakdown table compares platforms side by side. You can switch between the last 28 days and the last 90 days.
Which AI platforms are tracked
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, and Meta AI are each tracked separately. Visits from smaller assistants — such as You.com, Poe, Mistral, and Kimi — are grouped under Other AI. We keep this list up to date as new AI platforms gain adoption.
How AI traffic is detected
Google Analytics records the referring source of every session on your store. InstaIndex identifies sessions whose source is a known AI platform domain — like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, or gemini.google.com — and reports them as AI traffic, broken down by platform. All other sessions are only used to calculate AI traffic's share of your total sessions.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my AI traffic numbers lower than I expected?
AI assistants often answer questions without the shopper ever clicking through to a store, and some AI apps open links without passing a referrer, so those visits can't be attributed. Shoppers may also read an AI recommendation and then search for your brand directly, which Google Analytics records as search or direct traffic.
Treat these numbers as a reliable lower bound: the trend over time matters more than the absolute count.
Why don't the numbers match Google Analytics or Shopify reports exactly?
Data syncs from your GA4 property once a day and always excludes today, so recent visits appear after the next sync. Comparing with Google Analytics also requires the same date range and a report filtered by session source.
Revenue and key events follow your Analytics property's ecommerce and attribution settings, so they can differ from Shopify's own analytics, which attributes sales differently.
How often does the data update?
Once a day. The page subtitle shows when the last sync ran. If you've just connected, the first sync imports your recent traffic history automatically.
What can InstaIndex access in my Google account?
InstaIndex has read-only access to your Google Analytics reporting data, plus your email address so we can show which account is connected. We can't change anything in your Analytics account.
How do I disconnect Google Analytics?
Open Settings on the AI traffic monitoring page and click Disconnect. Disconnecting revokes the app's access to your Google account, stops the daily sync, and removes the AI traffic data stored in InstaIndex. Your Google Analytics data isn't affected, and you can reconnect anytime to import it again.
I see "No AI traffic recorded yet" — is something wrong?
Not necessarily. It means Google Analytics hasn't recorded any visits from AI platforms in the recent past. AI traffic is still small for many stores. InstaIndex checks for new traffic every day, so the dashboard fills in as soon as AI platforms start sending visitors to your store.
I switched to a different GA4 property. What happens to my data?
The AI traffic data from the previous property is removed and your history is imported fresh from the newly selected property, so the dashboard always reflects a single property.
Does this feature affect my store or my Google Analytics setup?
No. AI traffic monitoring only reads reporting data from your GA4 property. It adds nothing to your storefront and changes nothing in your Analytics configuration.
