llms.txt for your Shopify store

Written by Abhishek

What is llms.txt

llms.txt is a simple text file that helps AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude understand the content on your website. It provides a clear overview of your site's structure — including important page URLs and what those pages contain — so AI assistants can use that information when answering questions, summarizing topics, and recommending products to shoppers.

Think of it like robots.txt, but for AI. While robots.txt tells search engine crawlers what they can and can't access, llms.txt tells AI models what your store is about and where to find the most important information.

Why llms.txt matters for your store

Online shopping is changing. Many shoppers now use AI tools and assistants to ask questions, compare products, and get recommendations instead of relying only on traditional search engines. These AI systems gather information from websites to generate answers, summaries, and suggestions for users.

When AI tools can easily read and interpret your store, they are more likely to use that information when responding to users who are looking for products like yours — helping your store stay visible and accessible in the AI-driven web.

The llms.txt protocol

llms.txt follows the official specification published at llmstxt.org. It uses a simple Markdown structure: an H1 heading with your store or brand name, a blockquote with a short description, optional details as plain text, and H2 sections with lists of links in the format - [Link text](URL): Description.

Two file variants are defined by the specification:

  • llms.txt — a short, curated overview of your store for AI assistants.

  • llms-full.txt — a fuller reference with more store context.

Adoption status

The llms.txt specification is still relatively new and adoption is growing. AI systems that support it can discover and read the file when they visit your store, and the list of tools recognizing the format is expanding over time. There is no guaranteed timeline for when any specific AI model will pick up changes to the file — models crawl and index content on their own schedules.

How Shopify serves llms.txt

In early May 2026, Shopify started serving two files automatically at the storefront root of every Shopify store:

  • yourdomain.com/llms.txt

  • yourdomain.com/llms-full.txt

These files are generated by Shopify from your storefront data and override any version that apps previously generated. Every Shopify store now has llms.txt coverage out of the box, with no setup required.

As of mid-May 2026, Shopify has not released an admin setting, documentation, or an API for editing the contents of these files. It looks like Shopify generates them automatically from your storefront data.

Note: You can open the live llms.txt and llms-full.txt files for your store anytime from AI SEO → llms.txt in InstaIndex.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to set up llms.txt myself?

No. Shopify generates llms.txt and llms-full.txt automatically from your storefront data and serves them at your store's root URL. There's nothing to install, enable, or configure.

Can I edit the contents of these files?

Not at the moment. Shopify has not released admin controls, documentation, or an API for editing llms.txt or llms-full.txt. Apps, including InstaIndex, can no longer override these files either.

How can I influence what they contain?

It looks like Shopify builds these files from your storefront data, so the best thing you can do is keep that data clear and complete:

  • Store details — keep your store name, brand description, contact details, and policies accurate.

  • Catalog data — keep product titles, descriptions, collections, images, and availability up to date.

  • Helpful pages — maintain clear about, FAQ, shipping, returns, and buying-guide content.

What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

Both files are part of the same llms.txt specification. llms.txt is a short overview of your store. llms-full.txt is a more detailed reference with additional store context. AI models that support the specification can pick whichever version best suits their needs.

How is llms.txt different from my sitemap?

They serve very different purposes:

  • Sitemap is a technical file that lists every URL on your site. It's designed for search engine crawlers and answers the question "What pages exist on this site?"

  • llms.txt is a curated guide designed for AI. It answers "What should you know about this store?" by pointing to important pages with context about your brand, products, and policies.

How is llms.txt different from robots.txt?

robots.txt tells search engine crawlers which pages they are allowed to access on your site. It controls access but doesn't explain your content.

llms.txt is not about access control. It's a structured overview of your store's most important content, designed to help AI models understand what your store is about. Think of robots.txt as a "keep out" sign and llms.txt as a welcome guide.

Will llms.txt affect my regular SEO or search rankings?

llms.txt has no impact on traditional search engine rankings. It's specifically designed for AI models and doesn't interact with Google, Bing, or other search engine crawlers in the way that sitemaps, robots.txt, or meta tags do. It's an addition to your SEO strategy, not a replacement for any part of it.

I previously set up llms.txt in InstaIndex — what happened to it?

Now that Shopify serves llms.txt and llms-full.txt directly at the storefront root, the InstaIndex-generated version is no longer used. The llms.txt editor in InstaIndex has been removed and replaced with a status page that links to the Shopify-served files. No action is needed on your part.

How long does it take for AI models to pick up llms.txt?

There's no guaranteed timeline. AI models crawl and index content on their own schedules. Once a file is live, AI systems that support the specification can discover and read it when they visit your store.

Will I be able to customize llms.txt through InstaIndex again?

We don't know if or when Shopify will let apps manage these files again. If that changes, InstaIndex will add support so you can create llms.txt and llms-full.txt versions fine-tuned to your store. Until then, the llms.txt page in InstaIndex stays as a reference with direct links to the files Shopify is serving for your store.
