Guided schema setup scans your storefront, suggests values from your Shopify admin and store content, and turns InstaIndex's schema output on — all without changing anything until you confirm.
For a high-level explanation of schema markup, see What is Schema markup and why is it important for your Shopify store?.
Before you begin
Guided schema setup is available on the Premium and Business plans (and legacy equivalents). Schema markup itself is available on every paid plan.
Nothing is applied to your storefront until you confirm on the final step. You can back out at any point.
Setup typically takes a couple of minutes.
Choose a product page
Open Schema markup → Set up. You'll be asked for one product page URL. Pick a product that:
Is published and visible to shoppers (not a draft and not behind a password).
Lives on your main store domain.
Has visible reviews or ratings if possible — the richer the page, the more accurate the analysis.
Paste the URL and click Analyze schema.
Step 1 of 2: Current schema status
InstaIndex scans your homepage, the product page you chose, and (when available) your latest blog article, latest collection, and latest published page.
Recommendation banner
Based on what's detected on the checked pages, you'll see one of these messages:
InstaIndex is the active schema source. InstaIndex is already publishing schema on the checked pages. If duplicate sources or remaining gaps are detected, the banner lists them — click Contact support and our team can help remove the duplicate sources so InstaIndex is your single source of schema. Otherwise, continue to fine-tune values or come back later.
Your current schema covers the checked gaps. Another app or your theme is publishing schema that already covers what InstaIndex would add, and no duplicates were detected. No action is needed — you can exit the setup.
Schema coverage is good, but sources overlap. Your existing schema covers the checked gaps, but more than one source is publishing overlapping schema. If you'd like to consolidate to a single source of schema from InstaIndex, click Contact support and our team can help remove the duplicates. If you'd rather stay on your current setup, no action is needed.
InstaIndex can fill gaps in your schema. Another app or theme is publishing schema, but pieces are missing (for example, no reviews, no shipping details, or no Shopify product category and Category metafields for richer product schema). The banner lists the gaps. Before applying, turn off schema from the other source — see How to fix duplicate schema issues.
InstaIndex can add schema to your storefront. No schema was detected on the checked pages. Continue to the next step to set it up.
Set up schema markup with InstaIndex. Shown when we couldn't reach the checked pages. You can still continue to configure InstaIndex schema. If the scan keeps failing, click Contact support and our team can take a look at your storefront.
The banner also calls out:
Duplicate schema — whether any schema type was emitted by more than one source on the checked pages.
Schema gaps — schema types missing from pages where we'd expect them.
Fields useful for AI context — the Shopify product category and Category metafields (color, material, pattern, size, target audience, suggested gender) that aren't filled in on the selected product yet.
Page cards
Each checked page has a card with:
Source — the app or theme adding schema. "Unknown" means we found a schema but couldn't attribute it.
Schema types — the structured data detected on that page.
The cards make it easy to spot coverage gaps — for example, products with full schema but no Article schema on blog posts, or missing breadcrumbs on collections.
If the product isn't the right one, click the pencil icon next to the URL to pick a different one. Optional pages (article, collection, page) are skipped when no published example exists.
If a page can't be checked
If we can't load a page, common causes are:
The product is unpublished or behind a password — publish it or remove the password.
Your store is blocking automated visits — open the URL in a private/incognito window to confirm it loads.
The URL has a typo — click Change product page to fix it.
Click Try again after fixing the issue.
Move on
If we recommend switching to or staying with InstaIndex, click Next.
If your schema is sufficient but has duplicates, click Contact support to message us with the detected duplicate sources, or Proceed anyway to continue with InstaIndex.
If your schema is sufficient and clean, click Finish setup to exit without changes, or Proceed anyway to review suggestions.
Step 2 of 2: Review and apply settings
Suggested values are grouped into cards: Store identity, Contact, Social links, Retail stores, Product defaults, and Policies. Each row shows two columns — Existing (currently saved in InstaIndex) and Suggested (what we found). When both match, the row collapses to a single value with a No change badge.
Where each suggestion comes from
Every suggested value is tagged with a source badge:
Shopify — pulled from your Shopify admin (business profile, policies, products).
Storefront — read from visible text or markup on your live store.
JSON-LD — taken from existing structured data on your pages.
AI — inferred from your store's content.
Review AI suggestions carefully before applying. Each section is applied as a group — you can't edit individual values on this screen. After applying, open the corresponding schema configuration page (Organization, Product, or FAQ) to edit anything that doesn't match your business.
Apply only what you trust
Each card has an Apply suggestions checkbox. Uncheck any section to keep your existing values.
What each section covers:
Store identity — name, description, logo, and address. Review the description — it's the field most likely to need editing.
Retail stores — only relevant if you have physical locations. New locations are appended; existing ones aren't duplicated.
Product defaults — your review app, so aggregate ratings are included in the product schema.
Policies — shipping details and return policy from your policy pages. Fields we couldn't determine are left blank for you to fill in.
Click Apply & enable to save the approved sections, turn on schema markup, and return to the Schema markup overview.
After setup
Verify on a live page. Paste your homepage and a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator to see what your storefront outputs.
Fine-tune each section anytime:
Re-run setup anytime. Anything already saved appears as No change, so you only review what's new.
Frequently asked questions
Will Step 1 change anything on my live store? No. Step 1 only reads your storefront. Nothing is published until you click Apply & enable on Step 2 of 2: Review and apply settings.
What if I'm not on Premium or Business? Guided setup is only available on Premium and Business (and legacy PRO, PLUS, ENTERPRISE). On other paid plans, schema markup itself is still available — configure it manually under Schema markup → Organization, Product, and FAQ.
Will this conflict with my theme's built-in schema? It can. Most Shopify themes add some schema, and review apps often add product markup. If two sources publish schema for the same thing, search engines may pick one or flag a conflict. Step 1 calls out duplicates when detected — see How to fix duplicate schema issues.
Can I re-run the setup later? Yes. Re-running setup is safe — anything already saved appears as No change, so you only review what's new.
Can I undo what I applied? There's no automatic revert, but every field is editable on the Organization, Product, and FAQ schema pages after setup. To turn schema markup off entirely, disable it from Schema markup.
