Understanding IndexNow and how it works

Written by Abhishek

IndexNow is an open indexing protocol that allows website owners to proactively notify participating search engines whenever content on their site is added, updated, or removed. Instead of relying solely on traditional crawling where search engines periodically scan websites and may take days or even weeks to detect changes, IndexNow enables a direct, real-time communication mechanism.

When a change occurs, the website sends the affected URL to supported search engines through the IndexNow protocol. This “push” approach helps search engines discover updates faster, crawl the correct pages more efficiently, and keep their indexes more accurate. As a result, new or updated content can appear in search results sooner, while removed or outdated pages are processed more quickly, improving both visibility and overall index quality.
